Orbán is the EU's first country leader among 'predators of press freedom'

Report was published by Reporters Without Borders and has 37 world leaders

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is the first leader of a European Union (EU) country to appear on the list of “predators of press freedom” by the international organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The relationship was released last Friday (2).

“The self-proclaimed champion of 'illiberal democracy' has steadily and effectively undermined media pluralism and independence since returning to power in 2010,” says the RSF text, which had published the previous list five years ago in 2016 .

“There are now 37 leaders around the world in the RSF press freedom predator gallery and no one could say that this list is exaggerated,” said RSF General Secretary Christophe Deloire. “Each has their own style. Some impose a reign of terror by issuing irrational and paranoid orders. Others adopt a carefully constructed strategy based on draconian laws.”

On the list, 19 leaders command countries painted red on the map of world press freedom. These are nations whose situation is classified as “bad” for journalistic work. Already 16 leaders govern countries colored in black, the situation for journalism is “very bad”.

notorious figures

RSF singles out one particular figure in the list of 37 names: Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. “He is the center of all power and heads a monarchy that does not tolerate press freedom. His repressive methods include espionage and threats that sometimes result in kidnapping, torture and other unthinkable acts. The horrific murder of Jamal Khashoggi exposed a predatory method that is simply barbaric,” says the organization, quoting the Saudi journalist murdered in 2018 at the country's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

There are two women in the relationship. One is Carrie Lam Hong Kong, called by the RSF “Chinese President Xi Jinping's puppet”. It cites the recent closure of Hong Kong's leading independent newspaper, the Apple Daily, on June 24, and the arrest of its founder, Jimmy Lai. The other woman is Sheikh Hasina, prime minister of Bangladesh since 2009. “Her predatory exploits include the adoption of a digital security law in 2018 that has led to more than 70 journalists and bloggers being prosecuted,” according to RSF.
