Preliminary results show that center-left Social Democrats won over 42% of the vote, consolidating the position of the mayor, Social Democrat Michael Ludwig
The Freedom Party, the leading exponent of the extreme right in Austria, lost more than two-thirds in the regional election in Vienna, won by the center-left, on Sunday (11).
Preliminary results show that the center-left Social Democrats won more than 42% of the vote, consolidating the position of the mayor, Social Democrat Michael Ludwig.
With these results, Ludwig will continue to rule the Austrian capital, certainly in a coalition with Green environmentalists, who came in third, with 14.1% of the votes.
After a major corruption scandal last year and the expulsion of its historic leader Heinz Christian Strache, the Freedom Party suffered the biggest electoral defeat in recent years and moved up to fifth place, even behind the liberal Neos party, which reached 7, 9%.
