The Fight Against Racism and Fake News About Vaccines for Covid-19

The month of March marks yet another sad record for Brazil in relation to the number of dead and infected by Covid-19. Throughout the entire pandemic, the black population, in the city and in the countryside, has been disproportionately affected by SARS-CoV-2, its mortality rate is at least twice that of the general population, configuring a true massacre among the most vulnerable groups in the country.

On March 21, 1960, in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, about 20,000 black citizens, mobilized by the Pan African Congress, were protesting peacefully against the so-called “Pass Law”, which required them to carry identification cards indicating the places they could circulate. Heavy penalties were applied to anyone who did not present the document or circulated in areas limited to whites. At that time, the hateful apartheid racist regime was in force, in which a white minority dominated the black majority of the country with an iron fist. In the Sharpeville neighborhood, protesters were approached by military troops. According to reports at the time, the police force shot the crowd, killing 69 people and wounding 186 others. This event became known as the Sharpeville Massacre. In 1969, the United Nations (UN) in assembly declared the date as International Day Against Racial Discrimination. In the same year, Brazil, as a member state of the UN, enacted the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (DECREE No. 65,810, OF DECEMBER 8, 1969), which in its article 1 says the following: “In this Convention, the term “racial discrimination” shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, color, descent or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or restricting recognition, enjoyment or exercise on the same plane, (on equal terms) conditions), human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other domain of public life. ”

This month the Sharpeville Massacre is 60 years old, but unfortunately it continues to happen daily with the black Brazilian and world population, demonstrating the continuity of cruel structural racism. In Brazil, the absolute majority of the social, economic and epidemiological indicators of the black population are worse than those of the white population. All the indices got worse during the pandemic of the new coronavirus, and those of the quilombola populations are even worse than those of the urban black population. Currently, according to data the National Coordination of Articulation of Black Rural Quilombola Communities (CONAQ), there are more than 5,000 cases and 221 deaths of quilombolas registered in the country ( de-marco /). Pará, according to data the State Coordination of Associations of the Remaining Communities of Quilombo do Pará (Malungu) and the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), there are more than 2,000 confirmed cases and 73 dead by March 18, the highest number of deaths in quilombolas in the country. The black population depends more on SUS, has less access to health services, dies more for Covid-19 and has received fewer vaccines than the white population ( pedem-socorro.html, 115-entre-branco-em-2020.shtml,

Thus, “given the recognition of a series of omissions by the federal executive branch, especially in this context of a pandemic, in the implementation of fundamental precepts that ensure the right to health and a dignified life for members of the quilombola communities in the country”, CONAQ, in partnership with some parties and civil society organizations, in 2020 it filed the Fundamental Failure Compliance Statement (ADPF) No. 742 with the Supreme Federal Court. In 2021 the ADPF was recognized and received a favorable vote by the majority of the court, representing a historic milestone for the Brazilian black movement as it is the first time that the STF recognizes the right of a black social entity to file an ADPF, as it was entirely planned , written and signed by black and quilombola lawyers and lawyers, and by recognizing the existence of institutional racism, reiterating the need for the State to guarantee respect for diversity, the promotion of racial equality and the right to health and way of life for quilombolas .

In March of this year, there was the first meeting of the Interdisciplinary Working Group (GTI-ADPF 742) to debate, approve and monitor the execution of the Covid Pandemic 19 National Plan for Coping with the Quilombola Population, as indicated by the STF. several federal agencies, and representation of CONAQ and the Brazilian Association of Public Health (ABRASCO). Among the attributions of this GTI are those related to the elaboration of a National Plan for the Operationalization of Vaccination that includes quilombolas.

However, the implementation of any immunization plan for quilombola populations will require a set of specific measures ( vaccination-plan-among-quilombola-communities /) that most municipalities do not even begin to plan.

In addition to the logistical aspects, one of the main challenges for vaccination in traditional communities in the country is the dissemination of false information, the so-called fake News, which have already hampered vaccination in several indigenous communities and seriously threaten the national immunization process (https: // silva-and-edna-araujo /)

There are currently two vaccines in use in Brazil, Covishield, produced by Oxford / Astrazeneca in partnership with Fiocruz, and CoronaVac, produced by Sinovac Biotech and the Butantan Institute. Both need two doses to achieve maximum effectiveness. For Covishield the ideal interval between the first and the second dose is 90 days and for Coronavac this interval is 30 days. About 450 million people have already been immunized in the world, more than 13 million in Brazil, and so far vaccines have been considered effective and safe.

However, untruths continue to circulate among rural, indigenous and quilombola communities, which need to be clarified, some of which are:

1- The vaccine is ineffective: this is technically incorrect information since the effectiveness of any vaccine approved by the National Health Surveillance Agency of Brazil (ANVISA) is mandatorily greater than 50%, that is, to be used in SUS it needs to protect the person far more than any other individual measures that can be taken by the unvaccinated. Their main function now is to prevent people developing the severe form of the disease, which mainly affects the elderly and leads to long periods of hospitalization and most deaths. In this case, all vaccines are highly effective. That is, those who are immunized have a very small chance of needing a hospital, ICU, intubation and of dying if they become infected with SARS-CoV-2.

2 - The vaccine has side effects: although vaccines, and any medication, can have side effects, such as discomfort or redness at the injection site, headache or body pain the next day, among the hundreds of millions of people already vaccinated , hundreds of ethnicities, on all continents, no serious reactions or deaths related to use in previously healthy people have been confirmed.

3- My genetics will change: no vaccine has the power to change any part of the genetic code of human beings, or to make the person become something else. Our genes are inherited our parents and cannot be changed by vaccines.

4 - The vaccine can cause cancer and health problems: there is no scientific evidence that vaccines against Covid-19 cause disease and there is no medical record of any vaccine that causes cancer. The ones used now in Brazil have proven to be safe in all tests and are based on formulas very similar to those already used for several other diseases, which have been commonly applied here in children and adults for decades, with enormous success and reduced mortality among children and adults. adults.

5 - The vaccine is experimental: the vaccines in use at SUS were tested on thousands of people, including health professionals, in various parts of the world, before being approved by Anvisa. They are not experimental, tests already carried out in Brazil and in other countries, have shown that they are effective, safe and prevent severe forms of the disease. They have been approved for emergency use by the world's most demanding health agencies to reduce the thousands of deaths you see every day.

6 - The vaccine is killing the elderly: Who is killing the elderly, and also an increasing number of young people, is Covid-19. Vaccines in use in the country have been shown to be able to greatly reduce the mortality of vaccinees. In Israel and other countries, after vaccination, the death of the elderly has already been drastically reduced.

7 - Pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot get the vaccine: although vaccines are never tested on pregnant and lactating women for ethical reasons, the two in use in the country are made with inactivated (dead) viruses, a technology widely used in vaccines for a long time time and has not been shown to cause side effects in mothers or their babies. The Ministry of Health recommends that the use be made according to the analysis of the risk of the mother contracting Covid-19. Among quilombola and indigenous mothers, with o these are at high risk of death if they are infected, prudence recommends that they be immunized if they wish. The vaccinated mother should continue to breastfeed normally. Breast milk is the best food for the baby and will also protect it.

8 - It's up to the devil: Pope Francis has already declared: “I believe that ethically everyone should get the vaccine”. The vaccine is the result of scientific knowledge, which is a gift God to humanity. It is on the side of faith, saves lives, protects the elderly, who hold traditional knowledge and unite families. God threw evil, Lucifer, into hell with the angel of death. Vaccines are the opposite of evil and death as they promote solidarity and life, so they have nothing to do with the devil.

9 - The virus was created in China and China created the vaccine: current technology cannot create a virus like this in any country. Thousands of people died Covid-19 in China and the government there is using vaccines to control the pandemic in its population. In addition, most of the vaccines and medicines that we have commonly taken for decades have come that country and no one has cared about that until now. China is the main supplier of health supplies to Brazil, masks and gloves to cancer treatments, Coronavac is just one more. Other vaccines come India and will still come Russia, and many are manufactured right here in the country, with imported components, as we have no industries to make them.

10 - The vaccine will inject a chip to control you: Among all the false news circulating this is the most absurd. As seen, currently, we have in use two vaccines, originating in different places, Coronavac, which is manufactured in China and Brazil, and AstraZeneca, which is manufactured in India and Brazil. Throughout the campaign, several others will be used, such as Sputnik-V, made in Russia and Brazil, and that of the international consortium Covax of the World Health Organization. All were tested on thousands of people, dozens of countries and ethnicities, before being approved by Anvisa and undergo a strict quality control upon arrival in the country. Nobody knows which vaccine they will receive, which manufacturer or which factory. The doses are randomly distributed to the municipalities, according to their availability in Brazil and everyone, rich or poor, urban or rural, of all ethnic groups, receives the same vaccines.

Say YES to the vaccine when your turn comes. Help prevent the massacre. The protection of everyone depends on the actions of each one.
