Thursday (12) was marked by an avalanche of postponements or cancellations of sporting events around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic. They occurred in the wake of the postponement of the South American football qualifiers to the 2022 World Cup and the suspension of the NBA season, both at the end of Wednesday night (11).
The new coronavirus, called Sars-Cov-2, has reached more than 128 thousand people around the world - until the conclusion of this page -, with more than 4,700 confirmed cases of death. The country most affected is China, with more than 80,000 people infected and 3,000 deaths. In Europe, Italy is the nation most affected. There are more than 12 thousand patients and 800 deaths. In Brazil, more than one hundred are infected. There are still no fatalities in the country.

Spanish and Champions
Real Madrid announced on Thursday morning that an athlete on the professional basketball team was diagnosed with coronavirus.
With the diagnosis, the football team also went into quarantine. That's because the two sports share the same facilities as the training center, Ciudad Real Madrid. CT officials have also been recommended to remain in quarantine.
After the news released by the Spanish club, LaLiga, organizer of the local championship, announced that the football tournament will be suspended for the next two rounds. The possible return to activities will be evaluated after this period.
Uefa also announced on Thursday, at around 13h, the postponement of the two matches of the next Tuesday (17th) of the Champions League, valid for the return of the round of 16. Juventus v Lyon and Manchester City v Real Madrid have no date yet.
The Italian team is in quarantine after defender Daniele Rugani was diagnosed with coronavirus.
Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who spent a few days at his home on Madeira Island, will remain there until the situation at the club is normalized.
In this midweek round of the main European football competition, PSG played in Paris against Borussia Dortmund (ALE) with closed gates, while Liverpool played at home and with a packed stadium against Atlético de Madrid.
For the time being, the governing body of football in Europe has not commented on whether or not the Champions League games will take place next Wednesday (18), between Barcelona x Napoli and Bayern Munich x Chelsea. It is known until now that they will be with closed gates.
Uefa has scheduled for Tuesday (17) a meeting that will discuss the future of this tournament, the Europa League and the Euro-2020, scheduled to start in June and itinerant venues across the European continent.
The Portuguese Championship was also suspended indefinitely, according to a statement published at 2 pm. At 6:30 pm, it was the turn of the French Football Federation to suspend its competitions.
In addition to Rugani, the covid-19 was confirmed in another Italian player, at 11:30 am: Manolo Gabbiadini, Sampdoria. Around 7:15 pm, it was Arsenal's (ING) turn to disclose that the team's coach, Mikel Arteta, tested positive for the coronavirus. The English Championship remains unrestricted so far.
The ATP (Association of Professional Tennis Players) announced a six-week stoppage, which affects seven elite tournaments on the circuit, three of them the Masters 1,000 series (Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo). The first two had already been canceled when the entity defined the suspension. The premier tournaments of the WTA (Women's Tennis Association) in Indian Wells and Miami have also been canceled.
New NBA Case
After the suspension of the NBA on Wednesday night (11), indefinitely, due to the confirmation of the infection of the French pivot Rudy Gobert, of Utah Jazz, a second player of the team claimed to have the coronavirus: Donovan Mitchell, who next to Gobert is the main athlete on the team.
