Pandemic made more people join veganism

Apparently, the pandemic has turned more people into veganism in 2020. Numerous studies have shown that the Covid-19 pandemic has made plant-based diets more attractive. In the UK, a Mintel report found that 25% of Generation Y youth say the pandemic has made the vegan diet more attractive. Globally, Google Trends data shows that veganism's popularity is now at its highest, surpassing the previous record set in 2019.

In fact, consumer interest in healthier food has increased, in general, as a result of the pandemic. This, combined with innovation and the development of tastier vegetable alternatives to meat, has led to a boom in vegetable products on the world market.

But it's not just about health. Shoppers are also looking for ways to show compassion and make a positive difference during a difficult and tumultuous time. Reducing animal protein can be seen as a way to tackle the climate crisis and show compassion for nature, with the perceived health benefits.

According to a survey conducted by Veganoides, in Brazil, 3 out of every 100 people joined veganism after the pandemic. The survey was conducted online and the sample consisted of 101 Brazilians, October to December 2020.

Pandemic X Veganism

The connection between Covid-19 and the consumption of animals caused numerous posts on the internet to link veganism to pandemic prevention. In addition, there was also greater emphasis on healthy eating, as a way to prevent more severe forms of the disease.

In this context, 12% of respondents to this survey reported that after the pandemic they started to prepare healthier foods at home. Another 11% began to give even more guidance to friends and family about the impacts of eating meat and meat products on our planet. In addition, 7% of participants demonstrated understanding of animal suffering on behalf of the meat industry.

Another interesting piece of information refers to the relationship between fires in the Amazon/Pantanal and livestock. Then about 11% discovered new tasty recipes without meat, milk and eggs. There was also a greater understanding of the relationship between meat consumption and the emergence of new diseases in the world.

Since mid-March 2020, with the onset of the pandemic, approximately 10% have purchased more plant-based foods and 9.1% have ordered more vegan food delivery than before.

Veganism X Health

Of course, the origins of COVID-19 are still being studied, but it is clear that it is a zoonosis, an infectious disease transmitted non-humans to humans. The virus may have come trafficked wild animals, but most zoonotic diseases come farm animals.

Apart the origins of zoonoses, there is no evidence that a vegan diet is an isolated disease-preventing factor. However, people who consume lots of fruits and vegetables as part of their diet tend to have better immunity and may be able to fight infection more effectively.

However, it is noteworthy that not all vegan diets can necessarily be considered “healthy”. Following a plant-based diet is only “healthy” if it is well balanced with fruits, vegetables, proteins and complex carbohydrates. Being too restrictive or consuming unusually high amounts of any food group can make following a plant-based diet useless for your health.

In short, the pandemic has made more people join veganism, as well as more companies offering plant-based products to meet the growing demand. Apparently, a new generation of vegans is being born, who, in addition to caring about animals, also think about health and the environment.
